AxSetup.exe crashes when installing R3 CU12 reporting/analysis extensions on SQL 2016
I was recently installing AX 2012 R3 CU12 on a development VM and ran into an issue installing the SSAS extention. When I would try to select the SSAS Service name from the drop down, AX Setup would crash and crash hard.
First, I checked LCS which had a promising article. I did as it said but still had the issue. Next, I found this article from Tommy Skaue. I downloaded and installed the referenced KB but still had the issue. Out of desperation, I downloaded and installed the latest kernel hoping that would magically address the issue but no such luck. After that, I started manually checking the pre-requisites for AX 2012 as it relates to SQL. You need to have the SP1 stuff for SQL 2012. I found the link for the specific version required and downloaded the following:
For the SharedManagementObjects.msi installers, I was given the option to repair, meaning they had already been installed. I chose to repair just to be safe. Next, the SQL_AS_AMO.msi installers installed as normal. This meant that the SQL_AS_AMO.msi's hadn't been installed previously even though AX Setup was indicating that they had been. The "AMO" of SQL_AS_AMO means Analysis Management Objects. Those are required to install the SSAS extention for AX 2012. Once the AMO components had been installed, the SSAS extention installed without issue. It's worth noting that the template I was using was for SQL 2016 Developer edition from the list of Azure templates so this could be a result of how the template was created and you may not run into the same issues if you don't use a template.
