How to Install a Platform and App Update Package
Let's walk through how to install a platform update and application update. It's a fairly straight forward process once you have done it. As a call out, for this walkthrough is for a PU plus app package. You don't have to install both. That is just how I performed it for this article. Also the KB's can be unselected but you still get a combined package that includes them all as they are now cummulative. I got some additional clarifcation from Lane Swenka stating "You'll notice the asset that is saved is 4GB+ and that is because it is cumulative of the App+Plat. For any 8.1+ environments there will be a single tile that contains the latest version of the App+Plat package. They line up quite nicely so that 8.1.0 PU20 -> 8.1.1 PU21 -> 8.1.2 PU22 and so forth each month.". I have also noticed slight differences across a couple different projects. I did this using an LCS slot environment so cloud hosted environments may be slightly different.
First, bring up the environment you would like to update.
Next, scroll down to the available updates tile and click on it.
This will bring up all of the available binary updates for this environment. The newest one will be at the top of the list and more than likely includes the other items in the list as part of it. I don't know for sure that KB 4479708 is part of KB 4486424 but I am going to assume it is because KB 4486424 is a minor version release and also a PU release. Next, click "save package".
Next, deselect all and pick the specific KB or KBs you want to install. I'm only interested in KB 4486424 for this walkthrough. Click "Save Package".
Give it a description and click "save package".
You will see a message that the is being saved to the asset library and that it may take several minutes. Once complete, click done. Next, go to Maintain > Apply Updates and select your newly created package from the asset library and click apply. We're upgrading from PU21 to PU22.
You will get a confirmation message letting you know that you are upgrading to Update22. This is important as this specific environment is a BUILD environment so any builds that come from it will only be allowed to be applied to other PU22 environments. If my TEST environment is PU21, I will have to update it to PU22 before I can apply a build to it if that build came from a PU22 build box.
And that's it! This will start the servicing operation and in about an hour it will come out of servicing (hopefully - with no issues!).
